Serology

Serology labs help measure the levels of certain antibodies in the body, which are found in blood serum. This offers valuable insights into the abilities of a person’s immune system, including whether they are vaccinated against certain diseases or if they are at risk of a particular virus.

In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, these labs are more important than ever. Prompt, accurate lab results can help indicate a person’s immune response to coronavirus exposure and what their risk of infection might be in the future.

Serology labs also test for:

  • COVID-19 immunity (either through vaccination or natural infection)
  • Identifying problems with the body’s immune system, including autoimmune disorders (such as Graves disease, Celiac disease, multiple sclerosis, and others) or immunodeficiencies
  • Comparing compatibility between potential donor and recipient fluids or tissue
  • Foreign proteins from blood donation or other means
  • Vaccine response and effectiveness
  • Blood type crossmatching
  • Infection
